Pixel Art Color Palette Tips for Beginners
Why fewer colors usually looks better, and how to pick the right ones.
Why limit your palette at all
Pixel art reads clearly at a glance because every pixel is a deliberate choice — and that gets harder, not easier, with more colors available. A sprite built from 6–12 well-chosen colors almost always looks more cohesive than one picked from an unrestricted color wheel, because a small palette forces every color to relate to the others instead of competing with them.
Build a ramp, not a color list
Instead of picking colors independently, pick a base hue and build a ramp: shadow → base → highlight. Each step should shift not just brightness but slightly in hue too — shadows lean cooler (more blue/purple), highlights lean warmer (more yellow) than a flat light/dark version of the same color would.
That's a genuine 5-step ramp used by this tool's own bush generator: deep shadow, shadow, mid-tone, lit, and a bright highlight — the same structure that makes any hand-drawn sprite read as lit from one consistent direction.
Pick one light source and stick to it
Decide where the light is coming from — top-left is the most common convention — and keep every sprite's highlights and shadows consistent with it. Inconsistent lighting across a sprite (or across a set of sprites in the same scene) is one of the fastest ways for pixel art to look amateurish, even with a good palette.
Avoid pure black and pure white
Pure black (#000000) and pure white (#FFFFFF) tend to look flat and disconnected from the rest of a palette. A very dark desaturated color for outlines, and a warm off-white for highlights, will sit much more naturally next to your other tones.
Setting up a custom palette in the editor
In the Pixel Art Editor, use the color picker or type a hex code, then click + Add swatch to save it to your working palette. Build out your ramp swatch by swatch before you start drawing — it's much easier to stay consistent when the colors are already sitting in your palette than to try to match them by eye later.
